There are many powerful, spiritual spaces that draw devotees to Tiruvannamalai, a popular temple town in Tamil Nadu. The miraculous Arunachala mountain, a living form of Shiva! At its base, the fire element temple of Arunachaleshwara. Possibly, older than that, is the Adi Annamalai temple located on the other side of the mountain.
A walk spanning 14 kilometres, makes a powerful Girivalam, pradakshina of this holy mountain. Often considered wish-fulfilling, it draws lakhs of devotees every full moon night! Scattered along this 14 km pathway are numerous temples – some old, some new. Different deities, different stories and different significance for the sadhaka.
Across the temple town are a multitude temples and ashrams with their own powerful deities, saints and yogis. There are jeev samadhis, live gurus and a vibrant sadhaka community.
Naturally, planning a trip to this spiritual treasure would take a tad bit of effort 😉
