Uttaradhyayan Sutra: The Four Essentials to Moksha!

By Priyanka Dalal

Topic Categories:
mahavir swami idol with blog title on right side : Uttaradhayayan sutra: what are the 4 essentials for Moksha?
I recently started reading the Uttaradhyayan Sutra, which is also considered to be Mahavir Swami’s last discourse. It has a chapter on 4 Essentials or “Chaturangiy”. In this blog, I jotting it out in brief, and then providing the video where I have spoken more about it.

The Four Essentials, Uttaradhyayan Sutra

  • Getting Human Birth
  • Coming across “true religion / spiritual path” which can take the person to Moksha
  • Being convinced by these truths
  • Actually walking the path as per this “true spiritual path”

Cute descriptions have been given about different beings – hellish beings, demigods (asura), Gods in heaven, chandaal (sinful person), kshatriya, “hybrids”, inferior births, insects, invisible insects… etc… I am not entirely sure what these different beings mean. But, basically, we get the gist that we are moving through different beings and lives.

Eventually, after many, many births, some sense prevails… And they get human birth and eventually they listen to spiritual path… A lot of people, we can see around us, they will reject all spiritual sayings. And be engrossed in their selfish pursuits.

Eventually, after another many, many births, some sense prevails and we will listen and recognize the truth of spiritual path. At the time, our life may be tied up with many different demands – and we may not have the strength to walk the spiritual path.

Thus, again after another rounds of births,

we will finally,

gain all 4 essentials – human birth, coming across true spiritual path, recognising it to be true and thus, walking that path.

Kudos! For more watch the below video 🙂
